The Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM) Contractors have taken an important step towards strengthening cooperation and coordination among each other through the official launch of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality Contractors Forum, held at Eureka Hall in Burgersdorp

The launch marks a significant move towards bringing contractors from across the municipality under one coordinated structure, replacing the various town-based contractor structures that previously operated independently. These included structures such as the Maletswai Contractors Forum and the Jamestown Contractors Forum, among others. The establishment of one municipal-wide Contractors Forum is intended to create a more unified, accessible and representative platform for contractors operating across the five towns of Walter Sisulu Local Municipality.

The initiative seeks to improve communication between the municipality, contractors and other relevant stakeholders, while creating a clear platform through which contractors can be engaged on matters relating to opportunities, municipal programmes, skills development, compliance, procurement processes and other issues affecting the local construction sector. Addressing the gathering, representatives of the WSLM LED section, including  XolaMahali and Fernando, welcomed the establishment of the forum and expressed their commitment to working closely with the newly formed structure. They emphasised that the forum presents an opportunity to strengthen relationships between local contractors and the municipality while ensuring that contractors have a recognised platform through which their concerns and aspirations can be communicated.

The contractors were also guided on the importance of establishing a clear and functional organisational structure, supported by appropriate Terms of Reference. The forum will independently determine its leadership structure, including positions such as the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and additional members, in accordance with the principles and requirements agreed upon by its members. The municipality's role will be to provide guidance and support to the forum while allowing the structure to operate independently and represent the interests of contractors across the municipality. This approach is intended to promote transparency, inclusivity and effective engagement, while ensuring that the forum remains a platform that is driven by contractors themselves.

The formation of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality Contractors Forum also represents a broader commitment to unity and economic integration across the municipality. Rather than contractors operating primarily within individual towns or separate structures, the forum provides an opportunity for local contractors to see themselves as part of one municipal economy, working collectively towards opportunities and growth across all five towns.

The launch therefore goes beyond the establishment of another stakeholder structure; it is a step towards building a stronger and more coordinated local construction sector within Walter Sisulu Local Municipality. Through continued engagement between the Contractors Forum, the WSLM LED section and other stakeholders, the municipality looks forward to creating a constructive working relationship that supports local economic development, promotes opportunities for local businesses and contributes to the growth of the municipality as a whole.
