Walter Sisulu Local Municipality in effort to implement President Cyril Ramaphosa's directive requiring all Spaza shops and food handling facilities to register with their municipalities. This initiative is part of broader measures to address recurring foodborne illnesses that have caused significant harm, including fatalities, across the country.
Registration Drive started on 25 to 29 November 2024, where the municipality concluded the week-long registration initiative in Steynsburg today due to the unrest in the town which led to the reschedule of the session. This effort ensures all relevant establishments are properly documented and accounted for the LED office of the municipality represented by Mr Fernando Sandt gave a detailed overview about the process including their home affairs status, Sars as well as CIPC documents which need to be attached. Shop owners were informed about the registration requirements, including zoning compliance and necessary documentation and most importantly health and safety measures.
Municipal Health Service Official, Thandazani Sozoyi, emphasized compliance with health and safety standards, including cleanliness and adherence to by-laws. Establishments must meet these criteria to receive a health and safety certificate.
Vuyo Macwili explained in-depth about the zoning and rezoning requirements which will assist in legal trading in their jurisdiction. During the presentations the municipality actively involved local business owners, ensuring they understood the requirements and benefits of registration for public health and safety.
