Recently, an impactful initiative aimed at restoring dignity and supporting learners was held in Maletswai, bringing together government, private sector partners, and the local community in a show of unity and care. The programme was led by the Minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Pamela “Pemmy” Majodina, and commenced with a warm welcome from the Mayor of Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM), Cllr Vania Davids. In her address, she emphasised the importance of unity and community support, stating, “We are here today because we believe in working together to uplift our communities and support our learners.”

The Minister then conducted a formal handover of school uniforms and sanitary towels to learners from various schools. The programme began at ANTOS School, where the first group of learners received their uniforms, before proceeding to Aliwal North High School. Distributions were also extended to Bishop Demond High School, Egqili Senior Secondary School, Malcomess Senior Secondary School, Phambili Mzontsundu High School, Joe Gqabi High School, and Nchafatso Primary School.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, the Minister said, “This programme is about restoring dignity and ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to attend school with confidence.”

During the programme, ANTOS School Principal, Tsemane, expressed appreciation, noting, “We sincerely appreciate this initiative and the support shown to our learners. It will make a meaningful difference in their lives and education.”

The initiative was supported by a wide range of stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. These included WSLM, Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM), water boards such as Rand Water, Magalies Water, Lepelle Water, Vaal Central Water, and uMngeni-uThukela Water, as well as Catchment Management Agencies (CMAs), MTN, Metropolitan, and Premier FMCG. Government and community stakeholders present included the Department of Education, School Governing Bodies (SGBs), the African National Congress Youth League, the South African National Civics Organisation, the ANC regional office, and community safety structures such as Man Against Crime.

A powerful message was delivered on behalf of the learners, highlighting the daily realities many face. One learner shared, “For many of us, the question is not only ‘Will I pass?’ but also ‘Will I have something to wear tomorrow?’” Another added, “Some of us have been washing one shirt every night so it could be dry in the morning, but today, because of you, that story changes.” Learners emphasised the impact of the initiative, stating that, “With these uniforms, there is no longer a difference between rich or poor - we are all equal, we are all learners.”

Parents and school representatives also expressed deep appreciation for the initiative. Speaking on behalf of parents and School Governing Bodies, Zuzani Masina said, “This initiative shows us that we are not the only parents - there are people who care deeply about our children.” He added, “It reminds us that it takes a village to raise a child, and today we are truly seeing that in action.” Reflecting on the broader purpose of education, he quoted Helen Keller, stating, “The highest result of education is tolerance,” highlighting the role of education in promoting understanding, reducing prejudice, and building inclusive communities.

In closing remarks, Speaker Cllr Nalisile Mathetha extended appreciation to all stakeholders and donors, emphasising that, “What may seem small to those who are giving carries great meaning for those receiving.” He added, “Abo bebengenazo ngoku, ngomso bazobuya nethemba lokuba banento,” underscoring that those who once had nothing now return home with renewed hope. Overall, the event demonstrated strong collaboration between government, the private sector, and communities in advancing education, promoting equality, and improving the lives of young people in Maletswai.
