Mayoral statement on the barbaric killings in Maletswai
As the Mayor of Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, I, Cllr. Vania Davids, condemn the continued acts of barbarism and killings, especially of women and children, in Maletswai since the beginning of this year.
These killings are now increasing, and they surely represent a direct attack on our peaceful community. Our community is under attack by these senseless criminals who are hell-bent on taking one life at a time, mostly at night. One death is one death too many.
I condemn all these horrific killings in the strongest terms possible and I call upon the law enforcement officers in our town to roll up their sleeves and spare no resource to find these ‘human-animals’ before they take away one more peaceful soul.
The peaceful community of Maletswai cannot continue counting bodies of their fellows and loved ones, day-by-day, whilst there are no arrests. We cannot convey messages of condolences anymore, rather we must convey messages of appreciation for the arrest and sentencing of these criminals.
I call upon all community members to provide any valuable information that might lead to the arrest and sentencing of these faceless killers and all other criminals who might be behind them. It is a good thing to do!
The spirit of Ubuntu doesn’t allow us, as Africans, to keep quiet when we know who has killed a child, a woman, a brother, and/or a father within our close-knit community. These killers do live with us and we must report them to the authorities. We must isolate them in our community, for they don’t deserve to live with us.
I further call upon the community of Maletswai not to take the law into their hands. Let us work together with the law enforcement officers, albeit we are not happy with their service to this end.
