Recently, the mayor of Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM), Councillor Vania Davids, visited three local high schools: Bishop Demondt Secondary School, Aliwal North High School, and Egqili Senior Secondary School. The purpose of her visit was to celebrate and honor the hard work, determination, and resilience demonstrated by both the students and staff at these institutions. As a gesture of recognition, she presented each school with certificates of honor from WSLM, highlighting their significant contributions to the community and the education sector.
Accompanying Mayor Davids during her visit were Ward 7 Councillor Khiba Mathunya, Ward 8 Councillor Zoleka Betana, and Ward 9 Councillor Ignatious London. Together, they engaged in meaningful discussions with teachers, members of the School Governing Body (SGB), and various stakeholders. The objective of these meetings was to explore collaborative strategies aimed at supporting students in grades 8 through 12, particularly focusing on preparing them for the challenges they will face in higher education and the corporate world.
In addition to honoring the schools, the mayor took a moment to celebrate the remarkable achievements of two top students from the Joe Gqabi District: Ms. Asenathi Mpela, who excelled with seven distinctions, and another outstanding student, Ms. Ayanda Khahlu, who achieved six distinctions. Their exceptional academic performances have earned them acceptance into the prestigious University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), where they will pursue courses in life sciences. This acknowledgment not only highlights their hard work but also serves as an inspiration to their peers.
Furthermore, Mayor Davids shared encouraging words with the class of 2025, emphasizing that challenges are merely learning curves. She urged them not to succumb to defeat when obstacles arise and conveyed a powerful message about resilience, stating that the only limits to their potential lie within their own beliefs. She reminded them that, with determination, "the sky is the limit." Her visit was not just a celebration of achievement but also an inspiration for future success among the students.
