The waste management project in (WSLM) is a commendable initiative that reflects WSLM’s commitment to improvement and innovation in community services. By employing participants through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), the project not only provides employment opportunities but also fosters civic responsibility among community members.
The project, which commenced in September 2022, highlights a collaborative effort led by Olwethu Fitlane and Supervised by Mxolisi Mdumisa. With an initial cohort of 50 participants, those who remained were able to focus on significant activities such as paper collection, dismantling illegal dumping sites, cleaning open spaces, and maintaining the Island Spa area. The diversity in tasks reflects a comprehensive approach to waste management that encompasses both environmental cleanliness and community engagement.
One of the project's key objectives is to develop and implement a sustainable waste management system that actively reduces waste disposal and promotes waste minimisation This is crucial in fostering a healthier environment and enhancing the quality of life for residents.. The educational component is particularly important, as it not only informs the community about proper waste management practices but also spreads awareness regarding the negative impacts of illegal dumping.
The door-to-door education initiatives serve as a direct method to engage residents, thereby fostering a sense of accountability and encouraging sustainable practices within the community. By targeting illegal dumping specifically, the project aims to enhance the overall efficacy of waste management services while protecting both public health and the environment.
The Waste Management Project Plan (WMPP) in WSLM represents a strategic and innovative approach to waste management that not only tackles existing waste issues but also promotes a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship among community members.
