The Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM), in collaboration with the Department of Social Development , has demonstrated its commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the community through a meaningful social development initiative aimed at assisting a young person living with a disability. The initiative brought together the Mayor Cllr Vania Davids, Special Programmes Unit Manager  and the Department of Social Development and the Ward 6 Councillor Wesizwe Moeti, who visited the family to provide much-needed assistance and assess their needs. The support included the donation of a wheelchair and essential supplies, including diapers, which will assist the family in meeting some of the young person’s day-to-day needs.

Among those who participated in the initiative was Mzukisi Funo, Acting District Director at the Department of Social Development, who engaged with the family during the visit and formed part of the collaborative effort to ensure that the family received appropriate support. The  initiative was made possible through the intervention of Ms Thabisa Olifant from the Department of Social Development, who identified the family’s need for assistance and approached a potential sponsor to seek support on their behalf. Her efforts resulted in the family receiving a wheelchair and other essential items that will contribute towards improving the young person’s mobility, comfort and quality of life.

The wheelchair was sponsored by Khan, a wheelchair user and DJ, who has made it part of his personal commitment to support other people living with disabilities. This donation marks the first project undertaken by Khan to assist a family in need, demonstrating how individuals with disabilities can also play an important role in uplifting and supporting others within their communities.

The visit also highlighted the importance of partnerships between government institutions, community leaders, individuals and potential sponsors in responding to the needs of vulnerable households. Through such partnerships, communities can identify challenges and work together to provide practical assistance that can make a meaningful difference in people's lives. Ms Olifant emphasised that disability support should remain a shared responsibility and that people living with disabilities deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect.

“This initiative is about ensuring that people living with disabilities are not forgotten and that they receive the support and dignity they deserve,” said Ms Thabisa Olifant.

The Walter Sisulu Local Municipality continues to recognise the importance of working closely with government departments and community stakeholders to address social challenges affecting residents. Initiatives such as this demonstrate that meaningful support does not always require large-scale interventions; sometimes, providing a wheelchair, essential supplies and a caring support network can bring renewed hope and relief to a family. The municipality commends everyone who contributed to making the initiative possible and encourages continued collaboration in identifying and supporting vulnerable members of the community, particularly people living with disabilities.
