The Burgersdorp Town Hall was filled with pride and celebration as young
people graduated from the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) National Youth
Service (NYS) during an official exit workshop hosted by the Walter Sisulu
Local Municipality.
The event marked the conclusion of the NYS Burgersdorp Prison Project
and highlighted the dedication, personal growth, and skills development of the
participating youth.
Led by Programme Director Malusi Noruwana, the workshop brought together
key stakeholders including the NYS Coordination Unit, the Department of Public
Works and Infrastructure, NYDA, technical training providers, TVET college
representatives, and community leaders. In addition to celebrating the
graduates’ journey, the session also introduced post-programme opportunities in
education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
Mayor Cllr Vania Davids delivered the keynote address and lauded the
graduates for their commitment and active contribution to society.
“You are not just exiting a programme - you are entering a new season of
purpose. You are now ambassadors of active citizenship,” said Mayor Davids.
“You have given your time to meaningful work, gained essential life and work
skills, and committed yourselves to building South Africa with dignity,
discipline, and drive.”
She also affirmed the Municipality’s continued support for youth,
stating:
“Local government stands ready to walk this journey with you. We will
continue to create platforms for youth development, entrepreneurship, skills
training, and participation in governance. You are not alone.”
Delivering the opening remarks, Ward Councillor Mathee Nel applauded the
youth for completing the programme and demonstrating resilience.
“You have set an example to your peers by taking initiative and choosing
to invest your time in personal and community development,” said Cllr Nel.
“This programme proves that when young people are supported, they thrive - and
so does the community around them.”
The programme concluded with speeches from programme partners,
testimonials from learners, and the official handover of certificates and toolboxes
- marking a proud milestone for the young graduates and a hopeful step toward
their next chapter.
