Recently, Joe Gqabi Secondary High School convened a momentous opening ceremony that saw the gathering of teachers, stakeholders, and over 50 delegates from various departments. Additionally, revered pastors from different churches, the Department of Health (DoH), Department of Education (DOE), Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM), Community Leaders, and Student Governing Body (SGB) members were in attendance.
The event commenced with a solemn prayer led by Pastor Thembelani Ngqikazi, who shared the moving song "Wangithatha lana wangiibeka Lana ," meaning “God took us from here to there” symbolising the school's journey through challenging times. Pastor Ngqikazi delivered a powerful message to the educators and learners, encouraging them to exhibit courage and resilience.
Mr Buckland , the school’s principal, extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests, expressing gratitude for their presence and acknowledging the challenges the school had faced. He also conveyed heartfelt thanks to other schools for their patience and teamwork in assisting the educators and learners. A historical account of the school and the political hero, Joe Ndzingo Gqabi, was shared to help the learners understand his selfless sacrifices for the town.
Representatives from the Department of Education, Mr Sengoatsi and Ms Conjwa , openly shared the challenges they’ve faced but also showed great appreciation for the ongoing support. Cllr Wesizwe Moeti, speaking on behalf of the Mayor, gave an inspiring speech to the students, focusing on the importance of discipline and hard work. He also pledged to address the pressing issue of electricity at the school.
The delegates stressed the importance of the municipality and community working together to keep the school grounds in good condition, with one speaker reminding the students to help keep their school clean and organised. Georgina Makoloane, speaking on behalf of the parents, gave an inspiring message, encouraging the learners to uphold discipline, avoid carrying weapons, and show self-respect. The event concluded with a peaceful prayer and the guests were treated to a guided tour of the school.
