The Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM) is proud to announce the launch of a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving the quality of life for the residents of New Rest in James Calata. The project, managed by the contractor New Beginnings Projects, entails a 1km upgrade from gravel to a paved road, a development poised to transform the local transportation landscape.
The total cost of the project stands at R8.3 million, reflecting the municipality's commitment to substantial and quality improvements. The upgraded road will have a width of 6 meters, ensuring ample space for safe and efficient vehicular movement. Alongside the paving, the project includes the installation of stormwater-associated infrastructure, which will play a critical role in managing runoff and preventing flooding, thus safeguarding the new road and the surrounding areas.
In addition to the primary roadworks, the project will incorporate road markings and road signs, essential for directing traffic and enhancing road safety. These features will contribute to a more orderly and secure driving environment for all road users.
A notable aspect of this project is its inclusive approach towards local economic development. Two Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) from the area will be directly involved, benefiting from the opportunities provided by this substantial municipal investment. Furthermore, the project promises to create employment for approximately 12 general labourers from the community, fostering local job creation and skills development.
The gravel roads in New Rest have long posed challenges for residents, especially during adverse weather conditions. This upgrade to a paved road will significantly improve accessibility and reduce the wear and tear on vehicles, making daily commutes smoother and more reliable. This infrastructure enhancement is not just a road improvement; it symbolizes progress and the municipality's dedication to uplifting the living standards of its residents.
Mayor Cllr Vania Davids, speaking at the launch, emphasized the project's importance: "This development is more than just an upgrade, it is a commitment to our community. By investing in our infrastructure, we are investing in the future of our people, ensuring safer, more reliable, and more efficient roadways."
WSLM remains steadfast in its mission to deliver projects that bring tangible benefits to its communities. The James Calata project is a testament to this commitment, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing journey towards sustainable and inclusive local development.
