The ceremony commenced with a heartfelt prayer and words of encouragement from Pastor Ngqikazi, who reminded learners that they are the light of the world and possess the power to change their circumstances. He urged them to remain focused on their education, stay dedicated, and surround themselves with like-minded individuals who share their aspirations and values.
Bishop Kizito followed with words of inspiration, emphasizing that with authority comes responsibility – the responsibility to transform oneself, one’s family, the country, and ultimately the world. He drew parallels with the authority of Moses in leading and transforming the people of Israel, highlighting that education is fundamentally about transformation and growth.
The principal of Joe Gqabi High School, Buckland, warmly welcomed all attendees and expressed sincere appreciation to the esteemed guests, parents, and stakeholders for gracing this momentous occasion. He highlighted the significance of the day, which marked a major milestone in the history of the school - the celebration of the first-ever Class of 2026.
He reflected on the remarkable journey of the school from its humble beginnings to where it stands today, commending the learners, parents, and community members for their unwavering trust and support. He extended gratitude to the councillor for their donation, the Mayor for providing land for construction, and the community members and parents for their steadfast belief in the school’s vision.
The principal further acknowledged the invaluable support received from Vumile Primary School, Nchafatso Primary School, and Malcomess Secondary School, as well as all stakeholders who stood by the school from its early days.
He stated that the purpose of the celebration was to recognise the achievements of the learners, motivate them to strive for excellence, and encourage them to continue making their school and community proud. Learners were urged to take ownership of their future, work diligently, and pursue excellence in all their endeavours.
Mayor Cllr Vania Davids added her words of encouragement and extended her warmest congratulations to the learners. She said, “As the Mayor of Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, I am proud to offer my full endorsement and confidence in your abilities. Remain steadfast in your pursuit of excellence, remembering the values and principles that have guided you this far. Do not forget your humble beginnings, and let them inspire you to achieve greatness.” The Mayor then invited the learners to read aloud a pledge she had written for the Joe Gqabi High School Class of 2026.
On behalf of the Joe Gqabi High School staff, Mbenengene encouraged the learners to work hard and make sacrifices where necessary, adding, “May you all go out there and make us proud, alongside your educators and SMTs.”
The event also served as an opportunity to appreciate the unwavering support of parents, teachers, stakeholders, and the broader community who believed in the school’s vision and contributed to its growth. From the councillor who made a donation, to the Mayor who provided land for construction, the school’s journey stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit.
The ceremony marked a pivotal moment in the history of Joe Gqabi High School, as it honoured its first matric class of 2026. As the first intake, these learners set the benchmark for those who will follow, and their achievements are likely to leave a lasting legacy. The school community wishes them every success in their future endeavours.
