Recently, the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM) proudly hosted the Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (ICROP) at Hilton Hall. This important initiative, part of the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development's efforts, seeks to address child malnutrition and alleviate poverty, particularly in the province's poorest wards. The event was attended by various stakeholders, including government departments, community representatives, and health professionals.

The programme, spearheaded by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, aims to deliver integrated services to vulnerable communities, with a strong focus on malnourished children and mothers. This critical intervention aligns with the Provincial Poverty Alleviation Strategy and the recommendations of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The opening of the ICROP event was officiated by WSLM Mayor, Cllr Vania Davids, who highlighted the significance of this intervention for the community. In her opening remarks, Mayor Davids said, “This programme is a vital response to the pressing needs of our people, especially the most vulnerable among us – our children. By working together, we can tackle child malnutrition and ensure a brighter future for all.”

The event facilitated the delivery of much-needed services, including health screenings, social assistance registrations, and educational support. Representatives from various departments, including Health, Education, Social Development, and Cooperative Governance, were on hand to offer assistance to the local community.

The ICROP event stands as a testament to the municipality’s commitment to improving the lives of its residents, fostering collaboration across sectors to address key social issues. As the municipality continues to work alongside the provincial government and its partners, the hope is to create lasting change in the fight against poverty and malnutrition in Walter Sisulu Local Municipality.
