The Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM) Local Reference Committee (LRC) has recently concluded its comprehensive Community Works Programme (CWP) roadshow across all five towns in the municipality. This initiative was aimed at introducing leadership, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and addressing challenges within the programme, marking a significant milestone in community engagement and programme effectiveness.

The roadshow saw the participation of several key stakeholders, including the Eastern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (ECCOGTA) and the South African Youth Movement (SAYM). Salang Tsekoa from SAYM delivered an insightful presentation on the CWP Code of Conduct, emphasizing the importance of maintaining discipline and professionalism among participants. Meanwhile, Siphokazi Rhilityana from ECCOGTA outlined the roles and responsibilities of various entities involved in the programme, from national and provincial levels to local municipalities and reference committees.

Mayor Cllr Vania Davids, who was present throughout the roadshows, reinforced the municipality's commitment to the CWP. "This roadshow has been a pivotal moment for our community. It not only brought transparency to the roles each stakeholder plays but also addressed the challenges we face collectively," said Mayor Davids. "The participation and cooperation of everyone involved have been crucial to the success of the CWP in our municipality."

The roadshows were chaired by Cllr Wesizwe Moeti of Ward 6, who highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative. "Our goal was to ensure that every participant understands their responsibilities and feels supported," stated Cllr Moeti. "We have listened, learned, and worked together towards the betterment of our communities."

The presentations provided detailed insights into the framework of the CWP. The Code of Conduct, presented by Tsekoa, highlighted the importance of punctuality, proper conduct, and adherence to rules designed to maintain a safe and productive work environment. Violations, such as arriving under the influence of alcohol or engaging in abusive behaviour, are met with strict disciplinary actions to uphold the integrity of the programme.

Rhilityana's presentation shed light on the operational aspects of the CWP, detailing the oversight and support roles of national and provincial COGTA, municipalities, and the LRC. She stressed the importance of effective coordination, accountability, and the active participation of local leaders and community members in ensuring the programme's success.

The successful completion of the CWP roadshow signifies a collaborative effort to foster community development and enhance the effectiveness of the CWP within the WSLM. Moving forward, the insights and feedback gathered during the roadshow will be instrumental in refining the programme and addressing any emerging issues.
