Today, the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM), handed over equipment to support informal  business enterprises across towns within the municipality at Mzingisi Bhilisho Hall. The initiative forms part of government's ongoing commitment to strengthening local economic development, empowering entrepreneurs, and creating sustainable livelihoods through support for emerging businesses. A total of 27 beneficiaries from across the Joe Gqabi District will be receiving business equipment and tools tailored to their respective enterprises. Of these, an impressive 14 beneficiaries were from the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, highlighting the municipality's active participation in enterprise development programmes. The support provided included equipment for a variety of businesses, with some beneficiaries operating car wash enterprises receiving pressure washers, vacuum cleaners, and other essential car wash tools. Others in the baking industry received industrial mixers and ovens to improve production capacity and expand their businesses.

Speaking at the handover, Acting Mayor of the day, Councillor Wesizwe Moeti, welcomed the initiative and commended the collaborative efforts of the departments involved. "This initiative is aimed at empowering our local entrepreneurs, strengthening small businesses, and creating sustainable job opportunities for our communities. We encourage beneficiaries to use this equipment effectively to grow their businesses and contribute to the local economy," he said.

Also addressing the beneficiaries, Dr Mboto encouraged recipients to remain focused and resilient in their entrepreneurial journeys. He reminded them that challenges are a natural part of running a business and urged them not to be discouraged by setbacks or shortcomings. Instead, he encouraged them to make full use of the opportunities presented through the programme, continue working hard, and remain committed to growing their enterprises into successful and sustainable businesses. A community representative, Phindile Sitwayi, expressed appreciation on behalf of local residents, saying, "We are grateful for the support provided by DEDEAT. This assistance will help many small business owners improve their operations and create a better future for their families and communities."

The handover highlighted the commitment of government and stakeholders towards supporting local economic development and empowering small businesses within the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality and the broader Joe Gqabi District. By providing practical resources and equipment, the initiative is expected to contribute positively to business growth, job creation, and the improvement of livelihoods across the district, while helping local entrepreneurs build thriving enterprises that can support their communities for years to come.
