In a significant step toward providing secure housing for vulnerable families, the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality together with the Department of Human Settlements today handed over 14 completed houses in Burgersdorp as part of the Destitute Housing Project. The project, which involves the construction of 40 houses across the municipality—24 in Maletswai and 16 in Burgersdorp—aims to support those in need by providing affordable and safe housing.
The handover ceremony recently took place at the first designated house in Burgersdorp, with local community members, beneficiaries, and municipal officials present to mark this milestone.
The decision to expedite the handover was driven by a request from the community to provide occupancy for these houses due to rising concerns about vandalism in the area. Responding to this need, the Office of the Mayor swiftly approved the handover to ensure that completed units are safeguarded and that beneficiaries can begin to experience the stability of their new homes without further delay.
In her remarks, Cllr Zoleka Betana highlighted the importance of the project for the community, "Today’s handover is not only a promise fulfilled but a step toward building resilient, secure communities. We understand the challenges that arise from delayed occupation, and we are committed to ensuring that these homes are put to their intended use as safe spaces for families in need."
The Destitute Housing Project underscores the municipality’s dedication to social upliftment through strategic partnerships and community-focused initiatives. This handover ceremony signifies a milestone for Burgersdorp’s residents, who now have a foundation to build upon for a brighter future.
With 14 houses completed and more to come, the municipality reaffirms its commitment to addressing housing needs and supporting the well-being of its communities.
